Good afternoon from Melbourne, It depends how long you intend to stay in Melbourne and where. Some tourist attractions are readily accessible by public transport, for example Melbourne Zoo and Puffing Billy (as day trips). However, if you are planning to travel further afield, such as the Great Ocean Road or the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, you will need to either pre-book these as an organised tour or be prepared to hire a car. Sovereign Hill, a reconstructed 'town' from the gold mining era is also a good day trip from Melbourne - this can be done - with a bit of planning on a regional train to Ballarat and then a taxi, by car about 90 minutes drive from Melbourne or even as a pre-booked organised tour. One trap - Sydney to Melbourne looks 'close' on the map, however it is a one hour flight or 11 hours by road. Hope this helps

Early especially of you are driving as the car parks fill up as well and you will enjoy a walk. Pre purchase your tickets will help. Also not sure if you want to see everything. We skipped the Australian animals as we have a great hands on facility where we live in Townsville. The only queues (quite short actually) we had were at lemurs and butterflies. We enjoyed the elephant show and the feeding giraffes. Hope that helps
