Koalas grind the tough eucalypt leaves with their cheek teeth. They don't get many calories from their diet, but they conserve energy by moving occasionally and by sleeping as much as 20 hours each day. At the San Diego Zoo, koalas are offered fresh branches from several kinds of eucalypts each day.

The Australian forests are home to some of the most iconic and unique wildlife on earth. Cuddly looking and docile, koalas are perhaps the most recognizable species on the continent—but also one of the most vulnerable. Hunted for their fur, koala populations dropped dramatically between 1888 and 1927, leaving fewer than 300,000 in existence.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance maintains the largest koala population outside Australia and reaches a global public through exhibition, education, and research. We continue to gain key information from our breeding colony that supplies data on genetics, mate choice, vocal and scent communication, and health.
