ELI5: Who was Gaddafi and what did he do wrong?
Gaddafi also occasionally did things that we liked, like agreeing to stop building "weapons of mass destruction" (which in his case meant nuclear weapons) or give up the man who we blamed for the Lockerbie terrorist bomb, and so in exchange, Western countries sometimes ignored or didn't mention the bad things that he had done.

2020年5月5日 · Gaddafi ruled a country with a population of 5-6 million and the 9th largest oil reserves on the planet. We're comparable to the oil rich Gulf in that aspect yet if I blindfolded you and put you on a plane to Libya you'd think you landed in some mediocre/poor Arab country. Libya is embarrassingly undeveloped. The infrastructure is abysmal.

Libya was the wealthiest country in africa but thats a low bar and libya shares more in common with gulf countries all of which did far better and besides even Jordan had a higher literacy rate.
