Males are generally lighter and a more pure white underneath. Females are slightly heavier than males at around 360g (males usually weigh around 330g) although during the early breeding season females may weigh as much as 425g before egg laying. Barn Owl home range
Barn Owl home ranges are comparatively huge. In the winter they can be up to 5,000 hectares (that’s 7,102 football pitches!) but in summer, when there’s more food about, the area they use most shrinks to about 350 hectares. This equates to 1 km radius around the nest when they are breeding and about 4 km radius at other times.

Although rare, the species is well distributed. It is generally absent from uplands, urban areas, and major road corridors. The combined 2003-04 population estimate for the two counties was 620 to 830 pairs (approx. 15-20% of the UK population at the time). Arable Landscapes – Barn Owls require 14 to 21 ha of rough grassland within 2km. Pastoral Landscapes – Barn Owls require 31 to 47 ha of rough grassland within 2km. Mixed Landscapes – Barn Owls require 17 to 26 ha of rough grassland within 2km. These results help us better answer some fundamental questions relating to Barn Owl conservation.
