The USS ALABAMA is known mostly for her service in the Pacific during WWII. However, when the U.S. entered the war in December 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill requested support from American 16” armed fast battleships. This led to the USS ALABAMA and USS SOUTH DAKOTA joining the British Home Fleet where they planned to draw out German battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst. However, the Germans never sortied. On July 17-18, 1945 the USS ALABAMA and her task group bombarded major industrial plants in Honshu. Some 1500 tons of shells were thrown into the mills and factories, but the destruction couldn’t be observed due to heavy rains. The USS ALABAMA later learned that it was a job well done. In this video you see South Dakota class battleships firing at Honshu which is approximately 50 miles north of Tokyo (July 14-15). The USS ALABAMA would arrive at Honshu a few days later on July 17-18. • • • • #us
